The growing conditions are ideal for producing high quality, premium, Arabica beans. The region of Antigua is located between three volcanoes some of which are still active. When these volcanoes erupt they replenish vital nitrogen back into the soil. The area also has distinctive wet and dry seasons that provide a consistent climate for uniform maturation of the coffee berries.
Having achieved a high level of recognition for producing quality premium coffee, thirty-four of the local producers formed the Genuine Antigua Coffee Growers Association in the year 2000. The association’s goal is to protect the name “Antigua” by ensuring that coffees labeled as “Antigua” are only from that particular region, exhibit the highest quality, and adhere to the standards that have shaped it’s worldwide reputation as Guatemala’s best coffee. Antigua Coffee!
The association also assists the more than 935 producers in the region, many of whom are small farmers, with training and technical assistance to improve their production, knowledge, and processing methodologies.
